Ash Townsend’s physical collages assemble fragments of the past into intimate, one-of-one compositions. Working primarily with sourced vintage ephemera, found objects, and relics, she recontextualizes historical moments to construct contemporary narratives, juxtaposing what was, what is, and what might be. Rooted in nostalgia and a sense of anemoia, her work reflects a longing for eras just out of reach, inviting viewers into imagined histories that feel at once familiar and invented.
Each piece is materially layered and time-worn, increasingly evolving into sculptural, fabric-based works that incorporate embroidery and stitchwork, textiles and leather, and, more recently, wire and other dimensional elements.
The collages operate as both artifact and invention, preserving and reshaping history.
